Some Canvas Bags Shrink; “Canvas” Alone Cannot Predict Yours
A woven bag fabric can change dimensions when it becomes wet and is then dried. The change you see while the bag is still damp may not be the same as the change after it returns to its usual dry condition. Some changes can persist when manufacturing tension in the fabric is released. The amount, direction and permanence depend on the particular fabric and treatment, not the name “canvas” alone.
This is also a whole-bag question. A bag may have a lining, coating, print, leather or synthetic trim, hardware and different panels. Even if one textile could tolerate a wash, the finished bag may have a different care instruction. Our bag-care guide explains why the exact product and its maker's guidance take priority.
What may be happening
Wet Size and Lasting Shrinkage Are Different
Temporary wet-state change
Moisture can alter a fabric's dimensions while it is damp. One measurement immediately after washing cannot tell you what the dry bag's lasting dimensions will be.
Released manufacturing strain
A woven fabric may have been held under tension during making or finishing. Thorough wetting can release some of that temporary set, leaving a smaller dimension after drying.
Wash and dry conditions
Water, agitation and drying conditions differ between care methods. They must be named before two size results can be meaningfully compared.
Other bag components
Lining, coating, stitching, handles, print and trim can respond differently from the outer fabric. A change in shape may involve more than the canvas panel.
Saville's textile discussion also covers wool-specific moisture expansion and felting. Those examples are not evidence that a canvas bag felts or behaves like wool. We use only its general dimensional-change distinctions here.
Before washing a bag
Check the Exact Care Rule First
Care rules vary even among named canvas products. Baggu's FAQ says nearly all of its canvas products can be machine washed, while bags with hardware such as top zips are an exception. L.L.Bean's Boat and Tote page says to spot clean that named cotton-canvas tote. Neither rule transfers to an AltusPack style or to an unknown bag.
If the care label or maker has not approved washing, do not infer a machine-wash method from this article. If your bag has already been washed, assess its shape only after it is dry under the maker's permitted conditions; compare the same points you measured before, if you have them. Do not assume a damp size difference is permanent or that stretching will reverse a lasting change.

Saville, Physical Testing of Textiles (1999), Chapter 6, PDF pp.186–189, explains dimensional changes from laundering, reversible moisture-related change and lasting relaxation, and calls for comparable moisture conditions when measuring before and after. Textiles, 6th ed. (1988), Chapter 37, PDF pp.364–365, explains that care depends on the whole item's construction and that wash preparation presumes washing is allowed. The linked Baggu and L.L.Bean instructions apply only to those makers' products. None of these sources establishes an AltusPack bag's permitted wash method or shrinkage result.
