Before cleaning
Identify the Material and Construction First
A bag name or surface appearance alone does not establish a safe cleaning method. Check the care label and the maker's instructions for that exact product before deciding what to do. If the coating, print, lining, trim, hardware or stain is unknown, pause and verify those details rather than applying a general method.
For custom bag planning: record the shell material, backing or coating, lining, print, hardware and approved care wording together. A material swatch cannot establish how the finished bag will react to cleaning.
Canvas families
Canvas and Coated Canvas Need Separate Instructions
Canvas
Do not assume a canvas bag can be machine washed. L.L.Bean's instructions for its Boat and Tote single-tone cotton-canvas bag allow spot cleaning with mild detergent and air drying. That instruction applies to that named product only; it is not an AltusPack default or a rule for every canvas construction.
Coated canvas
A coating can change the appropriate care. Coach Japan gives separate guidance for its coated-canvas and fabric or jacquard materials, illustrating why a coated surface should not be handled as uncoated canvas. Follow the instructions for the actual product and coating.
Unknown finish or print
Waxed, laminated or otherwise unknown canvas, printed surfaces, linings and decorative pieces need their own product-specific confirmation. A local test on a hidden area does not prove that the whole bag can be washed.
Drying
Use only the drying method specified for the confirmed product. The L.L.Bean example specifies air drying for its own product; it does not establish a drying instruction for another bag.
Leather
Confirm the Leather Type and Surface Finish
First confirm whether the material is genuine leather and identify its finish. Smooth leather, suede, specialty leather and natural leather should not be assumed to take the same treatment. Coach Japan separates care guidance for several of these categories; its distinctions support identifying the surface before cleaning, not transferring Coach's care programme to another brand or product.
For one narrow, product-specific example, Coach Japan's Product Care guidance says that its Coach Sport Calf products can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and then treated with Coach Moisturizer. That direction is for Coach products identified as Coach Sport Calf and Coach's specified care product only; do not apply it to unknown leather, another brand or any AltusPack bag.
If the leather type, finish or stain is uncertain, ask the original maker or a qualified leather-care professional. This guide does not provide a universal cleaner, conditioning product, water-treatment method or restoration promise for leather bags.
PU and coated fabrics
Do Not Label PU or a Coated Fabric as Leather
PU, synthetic leather and coated woven fabrics are distinct from genuine leather. Their suitable care depends on the surface coating, backing, seams, print, lining and attached components. Confirm the exact material and product instructions before cleaning.
For an unknown coating, printed panel, lining, trim or stain, this page cannot prescribe a method. Keep the care question with the material specification and ask the maker for approved instructions for the exact SKU.
For a visual discussion, use the tote reference to identify a tote silhouette and zipper location, or the cosmetic-case reference to identify a case form. Neither reference confirms the shell layers, coating, lining, trim or care method for another bag.
